Flammable Stare
from Cannibal Fare
52" x 40"
acrylic on canvas
2023
Flammable Stare was created as part of the Cannibal Fare collection originally exhibited in 2023 in Houston, Texas.

The works in Cannibal Fare revisited visual elements from my work over the last thirty years and recombined them in new ways.  Some of the works in the series were actually painted over older works.  The process of using former images and older canvases is a literal cannibalization of my own work.

The blending of images and faces at different scales and colors creates a visual rhythm that encourages the viewer to create their own narrative about the works meaning.  Since the majority of the visuals appear in earlier works, the shuffling of scale and context blend their original intention and open the possibility of infinite interpretation.

The pair of mouths at the top of the canvas are from an acupuncture diagram and appeared in Gale from Corrolaries and Fierce Moon X (Apollo) from 1998.

The blindfolded woman in the bottom left corner is based on an illustration from Andreas Cellarius' Harmonia Macrocosmica and originally appeared in February 3 from The Days.

Surrounding the eye in orange are seven sections that each contain a specific type of pattern from various works and collections in my past.
