Cannibal
Fare was created as the title work of the Cannibal Fare collection
originally exhibited in 2023 in Houston, Texas.
The works in Cannibal Fare revisited visual elements from my work over the last thirty years and recombined them in new ways. Some of the works in the series were actually painted over older works. The blending of images and faces at different scales and colors creates a visual rhythm that encourages the viewer to create their own narrative about the works meaning. Since the majority of the visuals appear in earlier works, the shuffling of scale and context blend their original intention and open the possibility of infinite interpretation. In Cannibal Fare, the woman on the right is based on a vintage photograph of my grandmother from the 1920's and also appeared in the work Scrim from 2015. The Great Wave in the center right, originally by Hokusai, was used in Fuji from 1998. The tree branches in the carousel horsed saddle were a recurrent theme in the Secret Code works from 2021. |
